He took action in 1211 to place Alexios on the throne of the Nicaean Empire in place of Laskaris. He was martyred by a Frankish mercenary in the Battle of Alaşehir. The body of the sultan, who was temporarily buried in Alaşehir, was later taken to Konya and buried in the Sultans Tomb next to the Alaeddin Mosque.
